I'm very glad to see that Reading Buses has finally got round to providing a University Nighttrack Bus. I've supported this idea for some time, along with Dave Lewis, former president of Reading University Student's Union, who campaigned strongly for this issue last year. Given how poor streetlighting is around Redlands and fears about student safety at night, I've always felt that providing regular public transport from Town back to the University area and campus is vital. I also think it will reduce noise caused by rowdy students walking back to Halls from town and the impact this can have on residents in the University area. I really hope it will be well advertised, well used and that it is a success. I would like to hear from any students about their experiences using the new bus service. Now, while we're on the subject, how about RBC setting about increasing the number of cycle lanes between the Campus and the town centre? That would really be a step in the right direction. We get plenty of complaints about people cycling on pavements, which some PCSOs in Reading are trying to tackle, but it's hard to blame some people doing this when safe cycle routes in Reading are so thin on the ground. The Lib Dems will be outlining our thoughts on this in our contribution to the Council's Transport Commission which I'll post here shortly.
