Kirsten asked this question last night at a meeting of the Council...
We've been pressing the Labour council for months to get on with providing local recycling for residents in Redlands. By this we mean bottle banks within walking distance, instead of a forcing residents to recycle glass in their local supermarket car park in another part of Reading.
The failure of Labour to address this need can be seen on doorsteps in roads all across the ward. Glass bottles are left out with the rubbish by some residents in the vain hope that one day the Council may get round to recycling glass at the kerbside.
This is why Lib Dem environment spokesman, Cllr Gareth Epps, launched our campaign for glass recycling last May. I also set up a Facebook group last year for people to lobby for to extend the range of materials we can recycle in Reading.
Labour's ruling executive promised residents in Redlands that they would get glass recycling facilities back in October 2006, when the new fortnightly bin collection service was introduced in Reading.
Nearly 2 years later, residents are still waiting....
See below the answer Kirsten got last night from Cllr Waite, Labour's Environment Spokesperson:
"We are looking at 4 new glass bottle recycling sites in Redlands ward. They are as follows:
- Cintra Park, the car park entrance in Northumberland Avenue
- One the green near to 116 - 112 Hexham Road
- The footpath area outside no 28/30 Erleigh Road
- The Upin Arms Public House
There are outsanding issues around permissions highway access during emptying for some of these, that we expect to resolve within the next few weeks. Once we have finalised these, there is a 3-week delivery time for the bottle banks from our contractor WRG."
Other wards in Reading have got recycling facilities and any of' the 'outstanding issues' in these areas have been resolved. The list of sites (above) is neither new, nor are the reasons/excuses given for the delay.
I have a feeling we may well get the new bottlebanks in a few weeks...just in time for the local elections in May.
