This evening Kirsten, Cllr Gareth Epps and I sat down with senior officers from RBC's Housing and Highways departments to discuss parking problems on Hexham estate. I've been campaigning for months to get the Council to take this problem seriously.
Parking is a very controversial issue and it is very difficult to ensure that the Council comes up with schemes which are popular with everyone in a particular area or a scheme that solves everyone's individual problem. The residents of New Road will know all about this from recent experience!
This evening we discussed some of the issues residents on Hexham estate have highlighted to us including lack of parking spaces, car vandalism, parking on footways and grass verges and dumped/abandoned vehicles.
Part of the problem has been finding out which land belongs to housing and which land is public highway. Once we know this, we will be able to look at local schemes to improve particular problems and officers have agreed to supply us with this information. These might include improving streetlighting, line-painting and re-marking spaces.
Kirsten, Glenn and I will be talking to residents again shortly to find out exactly where the parking problems are so we can get officers to look at improvements for those areas and finally get things moving. Do you live on the estate? Email me and let us know what you think the parking problems are.
