We have had a lot of resident contact regarding the consultation
on SPA6 parking schemes.
Unfortunately, the schemes were posted by RBC fairly late and too
close to the TMAP meeting. In addition, we were very much kept in the dark
through out the whole process. Also, our comments made to the initial schemes
seem to have been ignored. Rest-assured, we will be investigating what went
wrong with this process.
Two schemes in particular seem to have evoked a strong response.
Donnington Rd:
Residents are happy for the yellow lines at the top of the road
to be extended on one side – so as the residents of Weaver Lodge can access
their car park. However, they do not see why these double yellow lines need to
be extended on both sides.
New Road:
Below I’ve collated all the comments I’ve been hearing, so far:
Problems
with proposed scheme:
- The scheme seems
poorly thought out – objectives are not clear, where was the consultation or
interaction with residents?
- Were observations
made on the Rd and different times of the day and week? Indeed, is August the
right time to be investigating when the students are away and may people are on
holiday.
- Reducing parking
provision will surely make matters worse
- Corner Yellow
lines, NWAT restriction
- Already space for large vehicles
- Wasn’t flagged up as a problem by residents
- Further restricts already limited parking
- My lead to New Rd being used, more so, as a rat run
- Cars passing through will be able to at elevated speeds (there
are many children living on New Rd)
- Could push non-resident parking in front of residents houses
- NWAT north-west
side
- Needed as auxiliary parking for visitor and residents returning
when non-residents have taken all the spaces
- May encourage non-residents to park outside residents houses to
a greater extent
General
Nature of parking problems, not addressed by officers:
- Congested at
weekends 8.30am – 5.30pm
- Resident
returning home for lunch often cannot park on New Rd
- Used as over flow
parking by UoR and RBH
- Residents find it
difficult to get a space near their houses
- Level of
vandalism of cars parked in the eastern part of the Rd
- The road is used
as a high speed rat-run
Suggestions:
- Access only sign
– not necessarily enforced
- UoR and RBH need to increase their own parking capacity for staff
