I recently asked the Council: "What plans has the Council to introduce segmented recycling bins alongside litter bins enabling residents to recycle glass, paper and aluminium cans in shopping areas and parks in the town and what are the anticipated time-scales for achieving this?"
You may have noticed the segmented bins which have appeared outside the Christchurch Road shops, this is part of a very small trial to do just what we were asking for.
They went on to say:
"These trial sites have bespoke bins for plastics, paper, and mixed cans, and were chosen because of their close proximity to the Bennett Road depot and the ease of monitoring. Results to date have been encouraging, however contamination levels are being monitored closely. Subject to funding being available, it may be possible to expand this to a number of other sites in 2009/10.
The numbers of ‘bring’ sites for glass has been increased over the past year, and we are still seeking new sites. Results from this expansion have been encouraging. The placing of smaller waste bin type receptacles for glass at shop fronts is being investigated, and could form part of a future project should funds become available."
The university already has many such bins on campus, and their scheme seems to work every well. In addition, the LibDem run London borough of Kingston has had a similar system in place since 2005. We will be watching this RBC trial with interest, and will be pushing for this scheme to be rolled out in the town centre and were ever people congregate.
