I received an email on Saturday from a constituent living on Donnington Road who has recently suffered from an infestation of rats in her home. She wanted to highlight this issue with me, and to raise concerns about the amount of food-related rubbish (no doubt contributing to the rat population) on Donnington Road and around.
On a Sunday I received an email from another resident, also on Donnington Road, complaining about the amount of rubbish on the road and the fact that wheelie bins were not collected last week when they should have been. To make matter worse the overfull skip that I reported to the Council a few weeks ago is still there, taking up valuable parking spaces and making the area appear run down.
In recent months a number of residents have contacted us to complain about the standard of street-cleaning in and around Erleigh Road. This is a densely populated area with a high-student population and a number of takeaway outlets.
We agree with residents that much more needs to be done to keep the streets clean and have been campaigning for some time to get the Labour-run Council to do more to reduce the amount of rubbish and litter in this area.
I have written today to Council officers in environmental health and streetcare passing on the concerns of residents and asking them to review current street-cleaning rotas for Donnington Road and to undertake a deep clean of the area.
